A Place with 4,400 Years of History
Sermermiut has been inhabited since the first people arrived in Greenland 4,400 years ago. The view of the icefjord and its majestic icebergs is truly world-class. But it wasn’t just the beauty that attracted early settlers. The high glacial activity in the fjord creates a nutrient-rich marine environment, supporting a rich wildlife. This abundance provided excellent living conditions for Inuit cultures and is still the foundation of Ilulissat’s thriving fishing industry today.
Tour Program
The tour begins at the Disko Line Explorer office, from where we drive to the Icefjord Centre near the old heliport. From there, we follow a wooden boardwalk that winds its way through the scenic Sermermiut Valley. Along the way, our guide will share fascinating stories about the ancient Inuit settlement, the area’s cultural history, and the surrounding nature.
At the end of the boardwalk, the landscape opens up to a breathtaking view of the Ilulissat Icefjord, stretching 70 kilometers inland. Here, we take a break to enjoy the view while we serve coffee, tea, and a delicious snack.
After the break, we walk back to the Icefjord Centre, where transportation will be waiting to take us back to the Disko Line Explorer office.
